Footage shows Oss losing his balance after hitting a fan before colliding with another who was leaning out to record the race with a phone.

"Complementary examinations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra that requires immobilization for a few weeks," said a statement from the team.

"Daniel Oss is therefore forced to abandon the Tour de France... The whole team wishes him a good recovery Daniel."

Multiple crashes, though not all serious, occurred during Wednesday's fifth stage as riders raced over cobblestones.

The Italian rider was able to finish the stage despite the crash, which also involved two other riders who fell behind him.

During last year's race, a fan caused a serious fall after getting in front of the pack of runners with a cardboard sign, which seemed to show a message for the television cameras.

The woman in question was later identified and detained by the authorities.

The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar is the current leader of the general classification of the Tour after winning the sixth stage.
