After several mayors talked to comedians who presented themselves as Vitali Klitschko using the deep fake method, the background has now been revealed.

You work for a Gazprom platform.

BERLIN — Amid the escalating Ukraine conflict, Berlin's governing mayor Franziska Giffey called off a video link last week in June after doubts arose that she was actually linked to Kiev's mayor Vitali Klitschko.

"The first quarter of an hour was completely unremarkable," said Senate spokeswoman Lisa Frerichs after the original conversation.

The mystery of the fake call has finally been solved: Apparently, the perpetrators worked for a platform that belongs to the Russian state-owned company Gazprom.

Klitschko deep fake: Comedians pretended to be the mayor of Kiev

"The supposed Mr. Klitschko asked how we are doing with the many Ukrainian refugees, how we deal with them, what the numbers are like, a completely normal conversation, as we expected," Frerichs described the call.

The conversation via video conference on the topic of cooperation between the two cities had been arranged long beforehand.

However, some issues were then raised that made Giffey suspicious.

"The point was that he referred to an alleged conversation with Ambassador (Andriy) Melnyk and asked how we see it that so many Ukrainians wanted to sneak social benefits in Berlin," said the Senate spokeswoman.

The Senate Chancellery finally said on Twitter that a conversation with Melnyk, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, confirmed that Giffey was not connected to Klitschko.

"Unfortunately, the reality is that the war is being fought by any means necessary," Giffey was quoted as saying in the tweet.

"Also online, to use digital methods to undermine trust and to discredit Ukraine's partners and allies," it said.

After the first shock of the fake video conference, the question naturally arose as to who was behind the action.

The answer to this question was provided personally by the perpetrators, who not only joked with Giffey, but also with other European mayors.

The two Russian comedians, who have claimed responsibility for the fake video broadcasts, say they work for an Internet platform that belongs to the Russian state-owned company Gazprom.

According to ARD information, they admitted in an interview that they were financed by funds from the Rutube platform.

This is a Russian copy of Youtube.

“We work for Rutube and are Rutube ambassadors.

So we get our money from there," Alexei Stoljarov, alias Lexus, told the ARD magazine "Kontraste".

Since 2008, Rutube has belonged to Gazprom-Media - a media group founded by Russia's state-owned company Gazprom.
