2022-07-08T04:36:05.819Z

Boris Johnson's withdrawal is THE front-page topic in British newspapers. There it is sometimes factual, sometimes humorous and sometimes rough. One newspaper even manages to portray the prime minister as a victim of his party.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned as party leader after unprecedented pressure from his Conservative Party.

For the time being, however, he will remain head of government: he will continue until his party has found a successor, Johnson said in London on Thursday.

Outside his office at 10 Downing Street, Johnson addressed the British public with his usual self-confidence: "I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world." to hear Downing Street boos;

his wife Carrie with baby Romy, government officials and employees, however, applauded.

The Prime Minister's resignation is THE dominating topic for the country's newspapers, with all the front pages devoted to the Johnson case.

Some newsworthy and serious, others more humorous and devastating.

The

Guardian

publishes a photo of Johnson on its front page, showing him with his eyes closed and dejected.

In addition, the newspaper headlines: "It's (almost) over" - whereby the addition in brackets is printed in much smaller letters.

The

“Independent”

also aims to ensure that Johnson initially wants to remain prime minister.

'He's leaving... but he's still at No 10' - a reference to the seat of government at 10 Downing Street.

"Johnson throws in the towel," reads the front page of The

Times

.

And the

Financial Times'

front page reads: "Johnson resigns, defiant to the end."

The front page of the

Daily Star

is less factual .

There is a list of Clown Johnson's political legacy.

There is space on the list for 35 points, in fact only three are filled in: Johnson bought a cute dog.

He is good at organizing parties.

And he chose pretty wallpaper.

Johnson was under pressure last spring because of a luxury wallpaper that was probably financed by donations.

The Scottish

Daily Record

lists numerous Johnson scandals on the front page, including Partygate and his failure in the corona crisis.

»Lie after lie after lie«, it says at the end of the list.

And then in capital letters: "The worst prime minister ever."

The tabloid

"Sun"

still finds reason to thank Johnson.

The newspaper writes about a photo that shows him embracing his wife and child: »Kiss goodbye … and thank you for Brexit, Boris«.

The

Daily Mail

- known as a supporter of Johnson - denounces Johnson's party.

She "expelled" the prime minister.

It was the day when the Tories no longer had all the cups in their cupboards.

The party is in a state of "collective hysteria" and no one has any idea who should succeed Johnson.

Bottom line (and front-page headline): "What the hell did they do?"

The front page of the

"Daily Mirror"

refers to Johnson's planned wedding: a big party is planned for July 30 in Checkers, the British Prime Minister's official country residence (read more here).

The newspaper now says Johnson is clinging to power "for one last party."
