Pack your things in summer and off to the next lake - sounds like a good idea at first.

But not all German bodies of water are suitable for swimming.

Munich - On a hot summer's day, there is probably nothing better than cooling off in an outdoor pool or in a lake.

Many people therefore use the summer to pack their bathing suit and enjoy the sun at the nearest bathing lake or pond.

However, you should make sure that it is suitable for swimming at all.

The European Environment Agency (EEA) has now published data on numerous bodies of water in Germany with regard to their water quality, which shows that there are some bathing lakes in Germany that are currently better avoided.

Swimming trip in Germany: Most of the waters are harmless

In 2021, the EEA examined a total of 2,291 German bathing waters and rated them from "excellent" to "poor".

The good news: 98 percent of the bodies of water were found to have a sufficient to very good water quality during the examination, over 90 percent of them even an "excellent" quality.

These are not only lakes, but also coastal areas on the North and Baltic Seas and some rivers.

Even if the EEA cannot examine all bathing waters in Germany, the result clearly shows that the majority of the waters should be safe for bathing excursions, at least this year.

In German bathing lakes, however, there will be cases of cercaria again this year.

These are flukes that penetrate human skin within a few minutes.

Fourteen German bodies of water with "poor" water quality

Only in fourteen bodies of water was it determined as part of the quality investigation that the water quality was "poor" and the places are therefore not suitable for bathing.

With regard to lakes, these are, for example, two bathing lakes in Hesse, near Frankfurt or in Bavaria a lake near Kempten and one near Ravensburg.

Above all, a fresh cool down could be needed there, because a severe heat wave is approaching in Bavaria.

Other bathing lakes with poor water quality were also found in Lübben and near Berlin and Neubrandenburg.

A man was recently resuscitated at a bathing lake in Central Franconia.

Numerous firefighters were needed to shield him from onlookers, some of whom were naked.

Beaches on the North Sea and Baltic Sea were also found among the fourteen bodies of water with poor water quality, which bathers should perhaps avoid again this year due to the poor values in 2021.

The water quality of a beach near Bremerhaven on the North Sea was rated as "poor" and that of a bathing beach in Barth on the Baltic Sea.
