New York-Sana
China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, called for ending the cross-border aid delivery mechanism to Syria as soon as possible and respecting the sovereignty of the Syrian state in this regard.
Commenting on the vote on draft resolutions on extending this mechanism yesterday, Jun was quoted by Xinhua as saying, "The Security Council must come up with a clear timetable to end this mechanism as soon as possible, and we must respect Syria's sovereignty, and relief through Syria should become the main channel for humanitarian assistance." “.
Jun stressed that "the mechanism for the delivery of cross-border aid is a temporary arrangement based on the special situation in Syria," reiterating China's supportive stance for providing humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people through the United Nations and the international community in accordance with the principles of humanity, neutrality and impartiality.
China's delegate pointed out that his country is actively providing various types of assistance to Syria through various channels.
Yesterday, Russia vetoed a Western draft resolution in the UN Security Council to extend the effects of resolution (2585), which the council adopted on July 9, regarding the delivery of aid to Syria across the border with Turkey for a year.
During the same session, Western countries obstructed the adoption of a Russian draft resolution to extend the work of the council’s decision for a period of six months, increase early recovery projects and deliver aid to all those in need from inside Syria only.
