The name of the place Soweto stands for South Western Townships.
Such housing developments are often characterized by overpopulation and a mixture of permanent buildings and barracks.
The towns are also associated with a high crime rate, although the situation has partially improved in recent years.
The country is also struggling with crime elsewhere: after a fire in South Africa's parliament, there was no shortage of blame.
