The indictment against Valery Sakovich was amended today (Sunday) and he is charged with the murder of Vardit in Karknot 29 years ago.

The sodomy clause in which he was first charged has been deleted and the prosecution is expected to demand maximum compensation for the family.

Sakowicz, who had lived in Belarus for many years, was arrested following the cross-examination of DNA samples found at the scene but initially denied that he had murdered the young woman

The indictment states that in Karknot he got into the back seat of the vehicle, and during the ride Sakovich turned onto Road 395, and between Moshav Ksalon and Moshav Eshtaol deviated from the road to a dirt road and continued his journey into the forest south of the road.

While in the woods, he hit her hard, committing sexual offenses and sodomy.

Later, he strangled her by force while squeezing her neck with both hands, causing her death, among other things to ensure his escape from the law.

The indictment states that he dragged her about 17 meters towards a hidden rock in the forest, left her body in place and drove away in his vehicle.

After the murder, several suspects were arrested, including her former commander and her partner, but they were released.

Over the years, police have continued to investigate and try to decipher the affair, and last year a breakthrough occurred.

A new team of researchers has examined the DNA detected in the arena using new technology, in order to understand which group of people the killer might belong to.

The researchers cross-referenced the list with information on the owners of the type of vehicle observed in the Barkanot collection in Tel Aviv.

Following this, the names of dozens of possible suspects came up, including the name of Sakovich who was in Belarus.

Dozens of possible suspects were sampled - but then Sakovich arrived in Israel after about 13 years living abroad.

Investigators located him at a hostel in Jerusalem where he lived, and a team sent there asked him for a DNA sample without telling him what he was a suspect.

At this point it turned out that there was a complete match and he was arrested.

His detention was extended, and he linked himself to the scene but denied murder.

He said he saw Beckernot's body as he passed by, checked her condition, and when he realized she was dead he continued his journey.
