Sergey Lavrov leaves the meeting of the G20 ministers - just to the speech of Annalena Baerbock.

The scandal is also an international issue.

But more significant is the resulting icy silence.

Nusa Dua/Berlin – In the midst of the Ukraine war and for the first time in months, Russia was represented among the most powerful states in the world on Friday – and quickly said goodbye with a scandal.

Vladimir Putin's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov left the meeting room of the G20 colleagues in Indonesia long before the end of the speeches.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) apparently played an indirect role in his departure.

There is conflicting evidence as to whether Lavrov left the round

before

or

during

Baerbock's reply to his speech.

One thing is clear: the German minister then found sharp words for the behavior.

As well as immediately before the memorable meeting already.

Baerbock and Lavrov: Putin's foreign minister leaves the hall - "in protest"?

The meeting of the G20 foreign ministry heads was on the agenda in a luxury hotel in Nusa Dua.

The fact that Lavrov had come at all had already caused some excitement in advance: the "family photo" of the participants, for example, was to be omitted.

It was heard that hostess Retno Marsudi received US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Baerbock visibly warmer than Lavrov, the Kremlin's top diplomat.

According to a report in the British

Guardian

, Lavrov delivered a "stern but short speech": "If the West does not want talks but wants a Ukrainian victory over Russia on the battlefield - both positions were expressed - then there may be nothing to do with it to discuss with the West,” he said accordingly.

At the same time, Lavrov described the sum total of Western sanctions as a "declaration of war".

According to information from the dpa, Lavrov left the hall immediately after his own speech.

However, diplomats reported to the AFP news agency that the Russian Foreign Minister left the room "in protest" when Baerbock made his contribution.

The Green politician, as acting chairwoman of the G7 group, had the floor immediately after the Russian.

Lavrov also did not live to see a video link with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba.

There was initially no resolution to the question “because of” or “before” Baerbock’s speech on Friday.

International media also took up the topic - but there was also some heated debate on social networks as to whether there was a substantial difference between a speech boycott or a refusal of bilateral talks: According to Baerbock, a welcome reception on Thursday was skipped , a "nice dinner" in the presence of Lavrov is not possible given the escalating conflict in Ukraine, she explained.

Either way, Lavrov must have expected an uncomfortable admission from the Germans.

Baerbock: Lavrov prefers to leave the room – Scholz's minister sends him bitter greetings afterwards

Shortly after arriving in Bali on Thursday, the Foreign Minister said that in her speech in Lavrov's presence she would "find very clear words that we do not accept this breach of international law".

The two politicians also know each other personally from an obviously intensive meeting in Moscow - Later, on Friday, Baerbock Lavrov sent allegations afterwards.

"Some members condemned the invasion."

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi gives an insight into the positions of the G20 foreign ministers on the Ukraine conflict.

"The fact that the Russian Foreign Minister spent a large part of the negotiations here not in the room but outside of the room underlines that the Russian government is currently not a millimeter willing to talk," said Baerbock after the scandal.

The vast majority of representatives at the meeting had condemned "Russia's brutal war of aggression" as the greatest current danger, she emphasized: "The appeal of all 19 states was very clear to Russia: this war must come to an end."

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Marsudi also gave an insight: The participants expressed "their deep concerns about the humanitarian effects of the war".

"Some members condemned the invasion," she added.

“Some” are not “all” – in fact, the G20 is not made up solely of staunch opponents of Russian action.

States such as China, India and South Africa are reluctant to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Baerbock and Lavrov Avoid Each Other: Icy Silence Between Russia and the West

It is evident that there is now an icy silence between Russia and the West.

Lavrov was unimpressed by the criticism.

"Our western partners try to avoid talking about global economic issues," he told journalists in front of the conference hotel.

"The moment they speak, they throw themselves into feverish criticism of Russia."

"It wasn't us that cut ties, it was the United States," he added.

"Nothing to discuss", "not a millimeter willing to talk" - that is the status of the mutual diplomatic efforts.

Russia in the Ukraine war: the Kremlin and the West are working on questions of interpretation - the question of guilt when it comes to hunger

And so it is now also a matter of bringing an interpretation of the situation closer to the

rest

of the world.

For example, when it came to the question of who is responsible for the impending hunger problems: Baerbock emphasized that Lavrov was not present when it came to the food crisis.

The G7 now wanted to jointly support the countries of the Global South and "ensure that the people who are already suffering do not slip into a much, much deeper famine".

Russia also has these questions on its radar.

The attacker recently justified the withdrawal from the Ukrainian island of snakes by facilitating grain exports.

According to the Guardian

in Bali, Lavrov

now pointed out that Russia could not export grain due to Western sanctions.

The EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, immediately relegated this to the realm of fables: there are no sanctions on food.
