For 26 years, the murder of Vardit in Karkanot remained in the dark.
In 2019, Valery Sakovich, 64, who lived in a hostel in Jerusalem, was arrested.
Today (Sunday) Sakovich confessed to the murder of the young woman, will serve a life sentence and will pay compensation of a quarter of a million shekels to the victim's family.
Sakovic, divorced and a father of two, with a criminal record from Belarus, stayed in Israel between 1994 and 1990 and then returned to Belarus.
He then returned to Israel twice more, when he was last arrested on suspicion of murder and rape, and a restraining order was issued on the details of the investigation.
He was arrested following the cross-examination of DNA samples found at the scene but initially denied that he had murdered the young woman.

The indictment states that in Karknot he got into the back seat of the vehicle, and during the ride Sakovich turned onto Road 395, and between Moshav Ksalon and Moshav Eshtaol deviated from the road to a dirt road and continued his journey into the forest south of the road.
While in the woods, he hit her hard, committing sexual offenses and sodomy with her.
He later strangled her while squeezing her neck with both hands, causing her death, among other things to ensure his escape from the law.
The indictment states that he dragged her about 17 meters towards a hidden rock in the forest, left her body in place and drove away in his vehicle.
