The left continues to argue about the Russia sanctions.

Ex-group leader Sahra Wagenknecht sees it as a failure - and wants to buy as much oil and gas from Russia as is necessary.

Berlin – The left had actually hoped to come to rest after its Erfurt party congress.

A new top management has been elected in Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan.

The party has also positioned itself in terms of content: above all in the controversial Russia policy.

The left continues to speak out against arms deliveries to Ukraine.

At the same time, the party condemns the Russian war of aggression - and supports sanctions that hit President Vladimir Putin and the oligarchs.

But the unity is already over about two weeks after the party congress.

In view of skyrocketing energy prices, ex-group leader Sahra Wagenknecht is calling for the economic sanctions against Russia to be lifted.

“No relief package can compensate for the possible additional payments that threaten the gas price.

The federal government must lift these senseless sanctions immediately,” said Wagenknecht

Despite the Ukraine war, Wagenknecht demands: “Buy as much oil and gas from Russia as we need”

The sanctions would not serve their purpose.

The Russian economy is relatively unaffected by this.

"They fill Putin's pockets because of the increased prices, while we ruin our economy and send millions of people into poverty," said the left-wing politician.

Since it was not possible to replace the Russian raw material supplies with other suppliers, Wagenknecht demands: "We have to buy as much oil and gas in Russia as we need to lead our normal lives and to keep the economy running".

The former parliamentary group leader is thus distancing herself from the party congress decision – even if the left has left open whether she supports an oil and gas embargo.

However, the delegates clearly spoke out in favor of the expansion of renewable energies.

And:

"The possibilities of restricting the import of fossil fuels from Russia as quickly as possible must be exploited," it continues.

Russia policy: Ex-party leader Klaus Ernst wants to put Nord Stream 2 into operation

But Wagenknecht is not alone in her criticism of Russia policy.

Ex-party leader Klaus Ernst had previously argued similarly in the "Rheinische Post".

Ernst, who is not only a member of the Bundestag but also chairman of the Committee on Climate Protection and Energy, spoke of a "completely failed sanctions policy".

It was "immoral to maintain the sanctions in this way." Ernst also suggested a limited commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The project was put on hold as a result of the sanctions.

The statement by the Bavarian deputy triggered violent reactions in the party.

Several left-wing politicians, including parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch, contradicted publicly.

But the support of Sahra Wagenknecht shows that it is far from an individual opinion.

And the Left does not rest even after their party congress.
