Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree today to facilitate the procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship for persons permanently residing in the People's Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, as well as in Ukraine.
The TASS news agency reported that the decree stipulates that “citizens of the People’s Republics of Ukraine and the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and persons permanently residing on the territory of the two republics or in Ukraine … have the right to apply for citizenship of the Russian Federation in a simplified manner in accordance with Chapter VIII of Article 14 of the Federal Law promulgated On May 31, 2002 on the citizenship of the Russian Federation.
It is noteworthy that in the previous version of the decree, the procedure for facilitating the acquisition of Russian citizenship applied only to residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
