MOSCOW – In the midst of the Ukraine war, Russia's President Vladimir Putin is offering Ukrainian citizens access to Russian citizenship.

On Monday (July 11), the Russian government published a corresponding decree approved by Putin.

It states “that the right of citizens of Ukraine, the Donetsk People's Republic or the Luhansk People's Republic to apply for citizenship of the Russian Federation will be simplified.”

Putin makes it easier for Ukrainians to get Russian citizenship

At the end of May, Putin had already decided to fast-track naturalization for the two southern Ukrainian regions of Cherson and Zaporizhia, which are largely occupied by Russia.

According to their own statements, the Russian occupation authorities there are already working on a referendum on union with Russia.

Accelerated naturalization has been possible since 2019 for residents of the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, which are occupied by pro-Russian separatists.

However, due to the new decree, the regulation now applies to all residents of Ukraine.

Ukraine-News: Next step to incorporation of Ukraine into the Russian Federation

The new regulation can be seen as a further step taken by Putin to incorporate large parts of Ukraine into the Russian Federation.

With the illegal annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014, Moscow already had the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

With the recognition of the self-proclaimed People's Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk at the end of September, the Kremlin chief then ensured the ultimate escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

A short time later the Russian invasion started.

The Luhansk Oblast is now almost completely under Russian control.

Since the beginning of the war, apart from Russia, only Syria has recognized Luhansk and Donetsk as independent people's republics.

However, observers only see this step as the result of growing pressure from Russia.

Next to Iran, Moscow is the closest ally of the leadership in Damascus in the Syrian civil war.

Ukraine-News: Moscow wants to strengthen its influence with Russian passports

For years, the government in Moscow has been accused of strengthening its own influence in other countries by issuing Russian passports.

Similar events are also reported from the Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia controlled by pro-Russian separatists, as well as in the Moldavian region of Transnistria.

Meanwhile, Russian troops are apparently preparing for another major offensive in eastern Ukraine.

The goal of the Russian military leadership is now said to be the capture of Donetsk Oblast.
