Through the Camera Lens: The History of the Presidents' Visits to Israel Israel today

2022-07-11T07:49:11.104Z

Since 1974, with the exception of three presidents, all have come to Israel • Who has come more than once and who has not visited even once in eight years?

From Nixon's meeting with Golda to Netanyahu's and Obama's coat scene:

US President Joe Biden's visit to Israel this week - the 12th anniversary of an incumbent American president - will be the first for a US president in the Holy Land since 2017, when Donald Trump landed at Ben Gurion Airport.

The last presidential visit.

Since 1974 - when President Richard Nixon arrived - every American president has visited Israel at least once except three.

The first was Gerald Ford, who served about two and a half years after Nixon's resignation following the Watergate affair.

The other was Ronald Reagan.

Although the latter was a friend of Israel and served for about eight years (between 1981 and 1989) he did not come to Israel.

However, it is important to note that the former Hollywood star did not fly much for state visits as president.

Another person who missed the visit to the Holy Land was George W. Bush Sr., who served as president from 1988 to 1992.

The latter's relationship, which is important to note, was strained with the person who was prime minister for part of his tenure, Yitzhak Shamir.

Tensions began when Shamir refused Bush's demand not to promote construction in Judea and Samaria.

The president who has visited Israel the most times is Bill Clinton.

The latter came to Israel about four times, one of which was for the purpose of attending the funeral of the late Yitzhak Rabin.

Clinton, who served as President of the United States between 1992 and 2000, is the only one of the presidents of the United States who managed to meet during his political travels with two different prime ministers - the late Yitzhak Rabin (1994) and Benjamin Netanyahu (1998). Rabin replaced Shimon Peres, who replaced the assassinated prime minister.

Barack Obama also came to Israel twice - once in 2013 for a diplomatic visit, and the second time in September 2016 for the funeral of the late Shimon Peres.
