Because of the Ukraine war, the Bundeswehr is again increasingly in the spotlight.

Christian Lindner is said to have found clear words in a letter.

Munich – For Christian Lindner, the world has been more than fine in the past few days.

On Sylt, Germany's island of the rich and beautiful, the FDP leader first married his partner Franca Lehfeldt in a civil ceremony and then in church the following weekend, which culminated in a big celebration with family, friends and companions.

There was undoubtedly a lot to plan.

The finance minister would also like one of his prominent cabinet colleagues to have more foresight.

Der

Spiegel

reports on "a kind of fire letter" from Lindner to Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht and Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

This was sent to the two SPD politicians on July 3 and urged them to hurry up with regard to the 100 billion euro package passed in response to the Ukraine war in favor of the German armed forces.

Lindner and the burning letter to Lambrecht: "Powerful and courageous reforms" in the Bundeswehr

In the two-page letter available to the news magazine, the 43-year-old calls for "profound and rapid reforms" with regard to the purchase of armaments.

He indirectly makes further financial injections for the military department dependent on this.

Lindner therefore reminds that the federal government has decided to “position our armed forces in such a way that they can again reliably fulfill their very own task of defending the country and the alliance”.

That's why he's asking Lambrecht to quickly make the mistaken purchases made by the Bundeswehr more efficient.

It is an "extraordinary financial effort" that "must be accompanied by reforms that are at least as powerful as they are courageous".

This would “constructively accompany” the Ministry of Finance, which is probably also to be interpreted as monitoring.

Lindner warns Lambrecht to reforms: Tremendous pressure from finance minister on cabinet colleague

Lindner does not seem to be really convinced of the previous purchases.

The letter goes on to say: “The poor current condition of the armed forces is not only due to their lack of funds, but also to a large extent to structural deficits and inadequate civilian and military management.” The law to accelerate procurement is “only a first Step".

Der

Spiegel

concludes that Lindner is putting “considerable pressure on Lambrecht” with the letter, which has been the focus of particular attention since the outbreak of war in the Ukraine at the latest and has been regularly criticized by the public.

In addition to hesitant and difficult to understand decisions, the former Minister of Justice is accused of lacking expertise.

Criticism of Lambrecht's work: In addition to Scholz, Lindner also looks closely at the Minister of Defense

The fact that Lindner's letter was also sent directly to Scholz is rated as an "affront".

Since the Liberal also announced that he would keep an eye on the spending of the armed forces, the news magazine wrote: "In addition to the chancellor, who likes to get involved in Bundeswehr issues, Lambrecht has a second actor in the federal government who exactly monitors their work in the military department observed.”

Lindner sent two signals with the letter: he was prepared to spend even more money for the Bundeswehr, but it was important to ensure that it was used effectively.

The Ministry of Finance is therefore saying that reforms are needed in the Ministry of Defense and the Federal Armed Forces, which do not cost money but bring improvements.

Lindner like Scholz: Finance ministers are looking at Bundeswehr reforms

The Lindner House is even of the opinion that further financial injections only make sense if the structures in the military area are consistent.

He should definitely find open ears with Scholz, because as finance minister in the grand coalition he had repeatedly called for corresponding reforms in the Ministry of Defense, the report recalls.

In addition to the Ministry of Defense and the Bundeswehr, Lindner also sees the armaments industry as having a duty, and in initial discussions he has already warned them to be more punctual.

He no longer considers price increases as in the past to be acceptable.

Will Lindner's mood quickly turn south after his wedding?

That should also be related to Lambrecht's reaction.

Despite other crises in the country, the finance minister has now raised the issue of the defense budget to his agenda.
