Because of the long deadline for submitting the tax return, the figures are only available about three and a half years after the taxable year.

In 2018, a total of 26,300 citizens in Germany had income in the millions that was subject to income tax.

That was around 1,500 more than in 2017. 1,247 income millionaires paid their taxes in Hamburg in 2018.

This was announced by the Statistics Office North.

The federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia lagged behind, each with two millionaires under 10,000 taxpayers.

But more or less up-to-date figures can also be found about the number of billionaires who live in Hamburg.

On the current “World's Billionaire's” list by Forbes magazine, there are 9 Hamburg billionaires.

These include the Otto family, Fielmann, the Tchibo heirs and the heiress to Bauer Verlag, Ivonne Bauer.

Kühne, as the richest Hanseatic city, is one of the 30 richest people in the world with his wealth.

Kühne is also ranked second in the Handelsblatt newspaper – there with assets of 39.9 billion US dollars.

Among the almost 1,500 Hamburg income millionaires there are likely to be many people who are unknown to the public, but many celebrities who live in Hamburg can also be counted among them.
