The infections of covid-19 accelerate exponentially in Mexico

2022-07-12T18:02:42.833Z

The country reported more than 149,000 cases of the virus in the last week of June, which represents an increase of 132% compared to the previous 15 days, according to official figures.

The fifth wave in Mexico accelerates the pace exponentially.

If at the beginning of June the daily infections were added to a daily range of between 1,300 to 3,500 patients, now they have grown to national confirmed incidences of 22,000 to 26,000 patients per day, according to the data released by the Ministry of Health.

With an upward trend in the number of new cases, last Monday, July 4, the highest number of confirmed infections of this fifth wave was recorded, 30,507, the highest number of this new wave.

Since the pandemic began on Monday, Mexico has accumulated 6.2 million infected and 326,085 deaths.

Mexico closed June with a significant rise in the number of infections by covid-19.

According to the daily count of infections, the country accumulated more than 302,000 infections, an increase that far exceeded the 36,779 cases recorded during May, which represented an increase of 721%.

The researcher Andreu Comas explains that the exponential acceleration is due to the predominance of the omicron BA.2 subvariant —currently more than 88% of the cases in the country are of this variant—.

"The increase in sublineage has occurred because we have allowed transmission despite being vaccinated and infected and we are forcing the virus to evolve so as not to disappear," he ditches.

The 10 entities that accumulate the highest number of cases are: Mexico City, State of Mexico, Nuevo León, Guanajuato, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco, Veracruz, Puebla and Sonora, which together make up 65% of all infections accumulated registered in the country.

Among the entities with the highest increase in cases during June is the State of Mexico, which went from 6,000 cases in the first 15 days, to accumulate 16,000 infections at the end of the month.

In the case of Mexico City, one of the epicenters since the start of the pandemic, it went from accounting for some 7,500 infections in the first days of June to ending the last week of that month with more than 42,000 infections.

The State of Nuevo León, went from 1,500 infections in the first days of the month to exceed 8,000 patients.

Although infections have multiplied in recent days due to the spread of subvariants of the virus, hospitalizations and deaths remain at a minimum.

Health authorities recorded some 456 confirmed and suspected deaths due to covid-19 in the country in June.

According to Health statistics, the distribution by sex in confirmed deaths shows a predominance of 62% in men.

The median age at death is 64 years.

While the level of hospital occupancy until this Tuesday stands at 16% for general beds and 4% in beds with a ventilator.

Far from tightening confinement measures, this government's strategy relies on mass vaccination.

To date, more than 91.5 million people have received at least one biological, which represents 77% of the national population.

However, Dr. Comas warns that mass events, mandatory use of face masks, require the forced isolation of cases and contacts, and ask people to enter the country for their covid test, as well as their vaccination certificate, must still be avoided.
