The New Trouble: A Global Shortage of Chickpeas Is Expected to Lead to Rising Prices Israel today

2022-07-12T09:43:35.170Z

The global chickpea inventory is expected to fall by about 20% this year, which of course will lead to an increase in prices • The reasons for the future shortage: All immediate suspects - Corona, transportation, war in Ukraine, weather and more

Particularly bad news: A global shortage of chickpeas could bounce back the price of a favorite wipe, and even leave many pitas dry and orphaned.

The corona, transportation problems, the war in Ukraine, salmonella, climate change and bird flu are just some of the plagues that have hit the world in recent years - plagues that create, each in its own way, shortages of certain foods.

From chocolate and popcorn, through potatoes and sunflower oil to sesame seeds and sriracha sauce - there is no shortage of examples of products whose global supply chain has recently gone awry.

Now it is possible to add chickpeas to the list, not on us, since according to the Global Pulse Confederation, their inventory is expected to fall by 20 percent this year.

And when inventory falls - demand and price soar.

The main reason for the lack of chickpeas lies in the war that is taking place in Eastern Europe, as Russia is responsible for a quarter of the global chickpea trade, and has exported about a quarter of a million tons of grains every year.

Ukraine is also considered a leading exporter of chickpeas thanks to crops of about 50,000 tons a year, but many of these crops were destroyed in the war.

But that's not all: weather damage, including huge floods, has damaged chickpea crops in other countries such as Mexico, Australia and the US (the latter, you'd be surprised, is the world's fourth-largest chickpea exporter). Percent, and by 17 percent since the outbreak of the corona plague.

At the same time, huge countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, whose residents often consume chickpeas for their plethora of aggregation states, are trying to acquire all the inventory they can get, before it is too late.

Not enough for you?

So Turkey, another hummus powerhouse, stopped exporting grains as early as March, near the outbreak of the war, because it is known that your country's wipers are ahead.

And what about Israel?

Although according to data from the Israel Consumer Council, an average of eight percent increase in the price of chickpea packages was recorded here this year, a shortage has not yet been reported.

Will this delicate condition be maintained, or will we have to get used to controversial wiping substitutes like bean spreads, peas and lentils of all kinds?

time will tell.

To be sure, the situation was tempting.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
