Does the combustion engine have a future thanks to e-fuels?

In the dispute over this question, Volvo leaves the European industry association - as the second car manufacturer.

Brussels (Belgium) – The EU-wide ban on new cars with climate-damaging combustion engines has been decided for 2035.

However, not only politicians are debating a crucial question of detail, but also car drivers and manufacturers: Is Europe's automotive future purely electric, or should clean synthetic fuels, so-called e-fuels, continue to be permitted?

For example, while Mercedes-Benz wants to switch entirely to electric drive, BMW is keeping the combustion engine open.

Strategies differ even within corporations: VW and Audi want to be completely electrified, Porsche hopes for e-fuels and is even involved in their production.

Opinions also initially differed within the Franco-Italian Stellantis group (which includes Opel, Peugeot and Fiat).

But in the meantime, its boss Carlos Tavares has positioned himself clearly and announced that he will only offer electric vehicles even from 2030.

Quarrel over e-fuels escalates: Association wants technology openness

The European industry association ACEA (“Association des Constructeurs Européens d'Automobiles”) in Brussels, on the other hand, continues to adhere to the “technology openness” between electric and clean fuel, also thanks to the influence of German manufacturers.

Stellantis was the first manufacturer to recently announce that it was leaving the lobby organization.

And even if the group officially denies a connection, it is obvious to industry experts: there are differences of opinion about the future of car drives.

Now Volvo is also taking this step: The Swedish car manufacturer, which belongs to the Chinese Geely group, will leave ACEA.

Like Stellantis, Volvo also only wants to sell Stromer from 2030 and clearly justified the break with the association with the differences: "We have come to the conclusion that the sustainability strategy and the ambitions of Volvo Cars are not completely aligned with the positioning and working methods of ACEA," Volvo announced. "We therefore believe that it is better to take a different approach for the time being," Volvo continued.

"What we do as an industry will play an important role in whether the world has a chance to mitigate climate change."

There will be fewer in the near future.
