The Bavarian Teachers' Association is urging the teacher shortage in primary and secondary schools to become an issue directly with Markus Söder.

Munich – It sounds a bit like a vote of no confidence against Minister of Education Michael Piazolo (FW), even if BLLV President Simone Fleischmann hastens to assure that Piazolo is “only doing his job”.

The Bavarian Teachers' Association (BLLV) is urging that the shortage of teachers in elementary and secondary schools be addressed directly by Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU).

It has to be a "top priority".

The middle schools in particular would have massive problems in the next few years, said Fleischmann.

So far, the state government has exploited the teachers' professional ethics, trying to somehow "muddle through".

Shortage of teachers in Bavaria: There are currently at least 650 full-time employees too few

The association calculates that there are currently at least 650 full-time employees too few.

Exact numbers are difficult to determine because primary and secondary schools are increasingly employing staff from outside the school without actual teacher training.

The BLLV names 22 occupational groups in a list, including remedial teachers, foreign language assistants, school tutors and student teachers in higher semesters.

The amount of payment varies greatly, from EG3 to EG11 and A9 to A13 everything is represented.

But it's not just about "a person standing in front of children in the classroom".

Association calls for better working conditions and equal pay for teachers

Professional training is crucial.

However, Fleischmann gave little hope that the problems could be solved quickly.

The number of students is currently declining. At the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, for example, a total of 167 students started with "teaching positions for secondary schools" in the 2019/20 winter semester, and in the year after next, 2021/22, there were only 70.

This development can only be corrected in the long term: Better working conditions are just as important as equal earnings for teachers - regardless of the type of school they teach in.

BLLV Vice President Gerd Nitschke spoke of a "competition between the types of schools".

SPD, Greens and FDP called on the government to change salaries.
