The former director of the National Theater of Greece, director and actor Dimitris Lignadis was sentenced Wednesday by the Assize Court of Athens to 12 years in prison suspended for rape of two minors and placed on parole.

After a resounding trial lasting almost four months, Dimitris Lignadis, 57, will be released from the high security prison of Korydallos near Athens where he had been detained for more than a year after his arrest.

The actor had resigned from the post of director of the National Theater of Athens in February 2021 after being accused of rape by three young men, minors at the time of the facts, as well as by a forties.

The court found him guilty only of raping two minors, pointing out that there was not enough evidence to establish the other two rapes.

Shortly before the announcement of the verdict on Wednesday, the prosecutor had proposed firm imprisonment for Dimitris Lignadis believing that he could commit new crimes.

“All the restrictive conditions are not enough and he denied all the acts for which he was found guilty by the court”

, argued the prosecutor.

But the court finally recognized the suspensive effect of the 12-year prison sentence by imposing a bail of 30,000 euros and a ban on leaving the country.

He will be required to appear three times a month at his neighborhood police station, according to the verdict.

Shame!”

, shouted angry rape victims and others in the courtroom after the announcement of the verdict and the release on bail of the convict.

The trial of Dimitris Lignadis is one of the first #MeToo trials in the Greek show business.

The case shocked public opinion in Greece last year and is part of numerous denunciations of sexual assault since Olympic sailing champion Sofia Bekatorou broke the taboo in December 2020, triggering a #MeToo late Greek.
