100 children on the waiting list: SPD calls for municipal care facility

The care situation is tense: around 100 children are on the waiting list.

The SPD local association wants to remedy the situation with a municipal facility.

Geretsried – Martin Bruckner presented an alarming number at the SPD city talks on Sunday in the Isarwinkel restaurant.

"Currently there are about 100 children on the waiting list for care facilities," said the local chairman.

Gabriele Poch, head of education in the day care center of a Munich elementary school, sees a need for action in the city of Geretsried.

Because in the municipality there are only church and privately financed childcare facilities.

She considers municipal sponsorship models, such as those practiced in Wolfratshausen, to be sensible.

Reiner Berchtold, former mayor of the neighboring town and now chairman of the children and youth development association there, agreed with her.

"It's good when the city has a lot in its own hands," he said.

Because collective agreements in the public sector are an attractive lure for specialist staff, which is currently scarce.

Berchtold suggested intermunicipal cooperation with Geretsried and pointed out that the KJFV, in addition to Wolfratshausen, has now also taken over the care of schoolchildren in Icking, Münsing and Egling.

"This allows us to react quickly and flexibly in the event of staff shortages," said Berchtold.

Bernhard Lorenz, former teacher at the Gymnasium Geretsried, advocates a cooperation due to the performance of the KJFV.

First of all, however, the comrades had to formulate a motion for the city council to create municipal childcare facilities.

Berchtold referred to the need to provide housing for the caregivers.

Company apartments, such as those planned by the AWO dementia center in Wolfratshausen, are the right approach.

The SPD members are aware that these measures cost money.

"But the costs come back through tax revenue if the parents can work more due to longer childcare," believes Andreas Vetter.

As the father of two children and chairman of the parents' council at the Isardamm elementary school, the lawyer experienced the childcare crisis first-hand.

Due to the legal entitlement to school childcare that will apply from 2026 and the increasing number of inhabitants in Geretsried, time is now pressing.

"If we don't do anything, we'll have 600 children on the waiting lists in a few years," Bruckner warned against passivity.
