La Teste-de-Buch
The Gironde had not known such fires for more than thirty years.
Late Wednesday afternoon, nearly 800 firefighters were still fighting to control the flames in La Teste-de-Buch and Landiras, in an unfavorable context: rotating and capricious winds, high heat and drought.
But no injuries or burnt houses were to be deplored.
The most important focus is in the south of the department, in Landiras with, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, 1,500 hectares burned and nearly 600 people evacuated.
In La Teste-de-Buch, 1,200 hectares went up in smoke and 6,000 people were evacuated.
But it is not a “megafire”, recalled the prefect of Gironde, Fabienne Buccio, Wednesday morning:
“The front extends over 5 km.
We are not overwhelmed.”
