The British Conservative Party announced the candidacy of eight of its members to compete for the leadership of the party to replace its outgoing leader, Boris Johnson.
And the British Broadcasting Corporation "BBC" quoted Graham Brady, head of the committee responsible for organizing the affairs of the party, as saying that "the final list of candidates includes 8 names to compete for the leadership of the party," noting that "the first round of the voting process takes place today."
Brady said the list of candidates includes Representative Kimi Badenouch, Attorney General Suila Braverman, Representative Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of Commerce Penny Mordaunt, former Finance Minister Richie Sunak, Secretary of State Liz Truss, Representative Tom Tugendhat and former Finance Minister Nazim al-Zahawi.
And the BBC drew attention to the withdrawal of former Health Minister Sajid Javid and MP Rahman Chishti from the competition just minutes before the deadline for announcing the candidacy.
According to the BBC, each candidate must have the support of at least 20 deputies in Parliament to accept their candidacy.
Boris Johnson had recently announced that he would step down from the leadership of the party and continue as prime minister until a new prime minister is chosen, and this came after a wave of resignations that swept his party and government against the backdrop of multiple scandals directed at him, including violating the anti-Corona rules in a scandal known as “Party Gate”.
