A fatal mountain accident has occurred on the Benediktenwand.
A 51-year-old woman from Kaufbeur fell about 80 meters over rocky terrain on Tuesday.
Benediktbeuern – According to the police, the hiker and her sister climbed up from Gschwendt (Benediktbeuern municipality) in the direction of the Tutzinger Hütte.
However, before reaching the hut, the two women separated.
Sisters wanted to meet again at the Tutzinger Hütte
While one sister was able to climb up to the hut, the other sister, who is described as fit and experienced, wanted to tackle the climb to the summit of the Benediktenwand alone.
Later, the two wanted to meet again at the Tutzinger Hütte.
The 51-year-old never arrived there.
Her sister then called 911.
A large-scale search operation by the mountain rescue service and the police began.
Four mountain rescue services and the police involved in the search
The Lenggries, Bad Tölz, Wolfratshausen and Benediktbeuren mountain rescue services were involved in the search.
The police were on site with a helicopter and officials from the alpine task force.
The missing person was found dead in the Benediktenwand area that night.
The dead could only be recovered the next morning
Due to the darkness and the exposure of the area, the emergency services could only start the rescue the next morning, because otherwise the rescuers would have put themselves in serious danger.
The victims were then rescued by the alpine police task force and a police helicopter in good cooperation with the locally responsible mountain rescue service in Benediktbeuren.
Woman wanted to descend on an exposed trail
According to previous knowledge, the woman wanted to descend an exposed path below the summit, which is occasionally climbed by local people with the appropriate equipment.
It is not an official path, rather this so-called Maximiliansteig leads through high alpine terrain, the police reports in the press report.
It cannot be finally clarified whether the woman from Kaufbeur made a mistake or followed a tour description from the Internet.
"Likewise, due to a lack of witnesses, there will be no answer to the question of why the 51-year-old fell and finally fell about 70 to 80 meters over steep, rocky terrain," said the police.
