Unterallgäu/Region – It's vacation time again.

Driving to the nearest motorway rest area for a short pee break can sometimes be a disgusting experience - almost everyone has had to experience this at some point.

The district club Allgäu of the ACE Auto Club Europa recently wanted to find out how the rest areas in the Allgäu are doing.

Two rest areas in the Unterallgäu were even rated "very good".

"Germany, your rest areas" is this year's motto of the nationwide club initiative of the ACE Auto Club Europa.

After the ACE volunteers had dealt with disabled parking spaces last year, the condition and, above all, the family-friendliness of the unmanaged rest areas on the motorways are on the agenda for 2022.

In Germany there is a 13,000 km long motorway network with around 1,500 unattended rest areas - some with toilets, some without.

At least 500 of these 1,500 rest areas are to be tested twice between April 1 and September 30 of this year by ACE volunteers for equipment, cleanliness, accessibility and family friendliness.

Almost 800 volunteers are on the road nationwide - on Friday, June 10, Katharina Schrader and Thomas Wilhelm from the Allgäu district board checked a total of 19 unmanned rest areas on the A7 and A96 motorways.

The results that they now presented: from “very good” to “failed” everything was included.

From the point of view of the Allgäu inspectors, there was a surprise at the "Kammlachtal-Süd" and "Kammlachtal-Nord" rest areas.

With 13.5 points, both systems were able to place themselves in the category "very good" - the "art in construction" in the form of sculptures placed on mounds of earth was particularly positively noted on the block.

The two car parks “Wertachtal-Süd” and “Wertachtal-Nord” got exactly the same number of points and therefore also “very good”.

Schrader and Wilhelm only see room for improvement in the “Parking spaces and road safety” category, where they only awarded three out of five points – they had searched in vain for an emergency telephone and a disabled parking space with a lowered curb.

In all other categories, however, the Wertachtal car parks really clear up: In terms of cleanliness (two points), the toilets (four points) and the equipment (seating with table, green areas and noise protection), the two car parks near Wiedergeltingen are above the maximum score points.

There are even a few bonus points on top of that: "The glass containers are particularly positive for us,

What is missing for "excellent".

The Wertachtal car parks scored a total of 13.5 points and thus “very good” – with further extra points for an e-charging station, a baby changing facility in the toilet area and a playground, it would even have been “excellent”.

Further impressions of the two ACE parking lot inspectors from the Allgäu: Despite the good use of the parking spaces, they were satisfied with the cleanliness.

Sufficient garbage cans are set up everywhere and they are also used - only cigarette butts were to be found "wildly distributed".

As far as that is concerned, the rest areas "Rottachtal-West" and "Rottachtal-Ost" (near Oy-Mittelberg in the Oberallgäu) were particularly convincing, because there are extra ashtrays here - but only in the area of the toilet building.

"It would be desirable to have more options for stubbing out and disposing of cigarettes in order to minimize the harmful impact on the environment caused by carelessly thrown away butts," says Wilhelm.

The “Rottachtal-West” and “Rottachtal-Ost” rest areas also had an information pavilion on “Kneippland Unterallgäu” and a Kneipp pool for the poor.

Unfortunately, the latter were not in operation at the two rest areas.

The Seebach rest areas (near Dietmannsried, three out of twelve possible points) and "Vorwald-Ost" (near Durach, four out of twelve possible points) failed completely.

Schrader and Wilhelm suggest that sooner or later such rest areas without toilets, which are also unlit and uninviting, should be closed and one or the other rest area with a toilet should be built as a replacement.

Another check up to September 30th should now round off the picture of the unmanaged rest areas in the Allgäu District Club area.

Then it will be seen whether the results of June 10 were just snapshots.
