A 23-year-old man from Maryland survived over the weekend after falling into the crater of Mount Vesuvius in Italy while taking a selfie.

Philip Carroll visited the famous volcano, whose eruption destroyed the city of Pompeii in 79 AD, with two relatives on Saturday, reported Paolo Capelli, president of Presidio Permanente Vesuvio, the site of the mountain from which the guides operate.

The family climbed the mountain from the town of Otviano and reached the summit via a no-go route, Capley told NBC News.

"The family has taken a different route, which is closed to tourists and controlled with 'no access' signs," he said.

When the family reached the summit at an altitude of about 1,200 meters, Carol stopped to take a selfie - and his phone fell into a crater.

"He tried to grab it, slipped and fell a few feet into the crater. He managed to stop the fall, but got stuck," Capley said.

"He is lucky. If he had continued to fall, he would have fallen 300 meters into the crater," he added.

The diameter of the cone-shaped volcano is 5 km and is 300 meters deep.

Carol suffers from scratches and cuts on his hands and back. Guides saw the fall from the other side of the summit edge and hurried to help Carol. They pulled him up using a long rope. Carol was stopped by Local police. It is not yet clear what the charges will be against him.
