Opinion | Do not be confused: Biden - a true friend, but does not work for Israel Israel today

2022-07-13T19:44:02.094Z

The highlight of Biden's regional visit is Saudi Arabia, but his decision to come to Israel first is a clear signal - to the extremist Shiite axis, to Russia and also to moderate elements. And in front of it is the good axis, at the navel of the United States and Israel, and next to them the sane countries in the region

A visit by an American president to Israel is a holiday: regardless of the identity of the comptroller, and beyond any dispute, he teaches about the strength of the ties between the two countries and their mutual importance to each other.

President Biden is no different in this respect from his predecessors.

He may be older than them and in a complicated political situation at home, but he is still the most important man in the world.

Therefore (and not only), the contempt for it that has been heard in recent days in our districts is a mistake.

Until his last day in the White House the eyes will be on him, and according to him will rule anything.

Moreover, Biden is a pro-Israel man who once defined himself as a Zionist.

This is his tenth visit to Israel, and despite all the disputes between the countries, he remains as loyal as his predecessors to the existence, security and prosperity of the State of Israel.

This is reflected in many ways during his 18 months in office - from special security assistance to equipping the Iron Dome to strengthening intelligence, operational and technological alliances.

The highlight of Biden's regional visit is Saudi Arabia, but his decision to come to Israel first is a clear signal - to the extremist Shiite axis, to Russia and also to the moderate elements - that for Washington Jerusalem is in first place.

This powerful alliance (which will also be recognized today in a joint document) is a fundamental pillar of the national security of the State of Israel.

The fact that a Democratic president ratifies it is of paramount importance in light of domestic and international radical processes.

And yet, not to be confused: Biden does not work for Israel.

He works with her.

His interests are first and foremost the interests of the United States.

Hence the gaps between the parties on the Palestinian issue and on Iranian nuclear issues.

Biden will try to promote the first in his journey, in order to provide even a semblance of the initiation of political contacts between the parties.

Israel will try to promote the latter during its visit in an attempt to halt or significantly improve the renewed nuclear agreement.

One can carefully evaluate a question and these are doomed to failure;

Israel and the Palestinians will go nowhere in the foreseeable future, and the administration in Washington will continue to be locked into a highly problematic solution vis-à-vis the Iranians.

It should not weaken Israel's efforts to make an impact, with the help of the backbone of its Gulf friends and partners from the Gulf and the Middle East.

Iran is not an Israeli problem, nor is it a regional one, but a global one.

Its decision to sell attacking UAVs to Russia in favor of the war in Ukraine is further evidence of its deep position on the axis of evil. If the Americans did not understand this before, they must understand it now. Of Middle Eastern (mainly Saudi) oil production in order to lower its price should be used to collect a coupon on the Iranian issue.

Anyone who hoped to see a significant political breakthrough against Saudi Arabia during the visit is likely to be disappointed.

The Americans wanted, the Israelis wanted, but the Saudis are not yet ready to publish the relationship.

It will take time, but even what will happen now - the transfer of the islands from Egypt to Saudi Arabia, and the granting of permits for Israeli flights to pass over the kingdom's skies - is significant progress, behind which there is a mountain of contacts, meetings and transactions that take place secretly.

Biden's visit will have a positive impact on these ties with Saudi Arabia and other countries.

The Americans are working to create a regional front - intelligence-operational-technological - with Israel at its center.

The Central Command (Sentcom) and the US diplomatic establishment are working overtime, and the next few days will show the world the picture Washington wants to convey: of the bad axis - which runs between Moscow, Tehran and its allies - and in front of it the good axis, in the U.S. and Israel. .
