Opinion | Four Things You Did Not Know About Visiting Biden | Israel today

2022-07-13T22:50:04.846Z

Regardless of the usual gestures to Americans such as a ban on Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria, this time there are additions that are kept under the radar • For example - the first visit of the President of the United States to East Jerusalem

Once again an American president comes to the Levant, and we are all excited.

The trumpets will cheer, children will wave flags, and the traffic jams will drive the mind crazy.

The usual gestures will also be made: the army will operate at low intensity, and Jewish construction will be banned in Judea and Samaria and Jerusalem in general - we will lower the profile until Biden passes. But this time there is an addition to the regular gestures, and they are kept under the radar.

As mentioned, until now we have been used to the fact that whenever a high-ranking figure arrives in the area, Jewish construction is stopped in controversial areas, such as Jerusalem.

Today stopping Jewish construction does not satisfy Harry, and since we have proven in the past that we have no backbone - there is no reason not to demand more.

This time, ladies and gentlemen, next week the Civil Administration will whitewash 14 illegal Arab invasions and the construction of outposts, all on Area C, ie an area under full Israeli control.

Which outposts?

The Civil Administration does not say.

It can cloud the atmosphere.

2. Despite the renunciation of our previous prime minister, Naftali Bennett, from the stubborn rumors that one of the gestures is to place Palestinian police at the Allenby crossing, the Americans continue to press on with the matter.

The significance of such a move is enormous: the presence of an official foreign entity at a border crossing bites at our authority in it, and signals that the Palestinians have a hold on the place as a border crossing.

Palestinian policemen in uniform, and perhaps also with weapons, symbolize the crossing of this border as a border between the kingdom and Palestine, drawing the border of the Palestinian state that will (also) include the Jordan Valley.

If Prime Minister Lapid agrees to this unfounded demand, he will set the boundaries of the Palestinian state.

3. Reopening of the US Consulate in East Jerusalem: Remember the celebrations of the inauguration of the US Embassy in Jerusalem in the happy days of Trump?

Forget it.

The upgrade received by our United Capital has been canceled.

The consulate that operated in the city until the opening of the embassy and closed, will reopen, and the Ministry of Palestine will now report directly to the State Bureau without having to go through Israel.

As Shlomo Artzi says: This is how it is when there are two.

Even when there is none.

Jerusalem will probably be the only country in the world where an embassy and a consulate operate at the same time, because in the Biden era these are narratives, not reality, and they want to hear both in stereo.

4. The last, and perhaps most outrageous, gesture is a visit to Biden in East Jerusalem, where he will meet with senior Palestinian officials.

This is the first visit of an American president to the east of the city, and it will be held at the head of the Israeli government, without the coordination and accompaniment of the sovereign in East Jerusalem, who, to the knowledge of the Americans, is Israel.

This move is contrary to any diplomatic protocol, and is also contrary to American law, which recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
