A woman from Poinger (13) got lost in the tariff jungle of the S-Bahn: She had stamped a strip ticket - and was still supposed to pay a fine.

The mother fights back.

Poing – Maria, 13 years old, buys a U21 strip ticket (price: 8.30 euros) at the Poing S-Bahn station, stamps it in front of the boarding for the journey to Munich and is checked shortly afterwards in the S-Bahn.

The inspector tells the schoolgirl from Poing that she is driving “under the counter” because, as a 13-year-old, she is not allowed to use a U21 stripe ticket, but a single children’s ticket.

The inspector then issues an additional claim of 60 euros.

S-Bahn trouble: girl stamps strip card - additional demand for 60 euros

When Maria tells her mother about it, they both drive to the S-Bahn customer center at Ostbahnhof to clarify the matter.

"Unfortunately, there was an extremely unfriendly employee who was not very interested in the process and had also made my daughter out to be a liar by saying succinctly that she had obviously only stamped the strip card afterwards, after the check," reports Verena Rapp (whose name, like that of her daughter, has been changed upon request).

But the stamp on the map clearly shows the time: 4:20 p.m.

The departure time in Poing.

Attempts to explain this to the Bahn employee failed, says Verena Rapp.

She speaks of "impudence" and "audacity" about how the railways deal with customers.

Also with a view to the fact that there are regular disruptions, failures and delays, often without announcements on the platforms or on the train.

Tariff jungle on the Munich S-Bahn: differences in the strip tickets

At the request of our newspaper, a spokesman for the Munich S-Bahn said that there was a distinction between "children (6 to 14 years)" and "U21".

In a written reply via e-mail he explains: “Children under 6 travel for free.

Children between the ages of 6 and 14 stamp one stripe of the regular stripe ticket per journey or use a children's single ticket or day ticket.

Children and young people aged 15 and under 21 use the special U21 stripe card and stamp the required number of strips.”

After the incident: Bahn apologizes and is accommodating

Not only the number of stripes is decisive for the validity of a ticket, but also the type of ticket.

In this case, the U21 strip ticket was wrong.

As a result, the subsequent fare collection of 60 euros is generally justified.

"As a gesture of goodwill, we are exceptionally accommodating the passenger in this special case and are stopping the fare collection or reducing it to the ticket price of 1.70 euros," the railway spokesman continues.

1.70 euros is the price for a single trip child (6-14 years).

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Ebersberg newsletter.

Regarding the behavior of the railway employee in the customer center described by his mother, he says that it is generally difficult to judge conversations afterwards.

"If our employee behaved impolitely or wrongly accused the daughter of something, we can only apologize."

After trouble with the S-Bahn: Mother announces that she will only drive in the future

In general, employees in the customer center cannot process any objections or reverse a fare collection – they can only accept the payment of the 60 euros.

For objections, customers would be referred to the processing center in Baden-Baden.

Verena Rapp is satisfied that the track is accommodating.

Otherwise she would have continued her complaint, she emphasizes.

The incident and the recurring annoyance with delays and the like have nevertheless made her rethink: “I will no longer use the S-Bahn, but will switch directly to the car in the future.

That way I can at least get to work reliably and on time.”
