Biodiversity is to be promoted through the “Stadtgrün naturnah” project.

Geretsried – If Dr.

When Gabriele Rogge used to walk from home along Egerlandstraße to the city center, she always thought at the corner of Böhmerwaldstraße: "Something could be done there." There were two green strips to the right and left of the path.

Only meadow, no bed.

She changed that.

Together with another Geretsrieder, she planted wildflowers at this point.

That's two years ago.

They're in full bloom now, and bumblebees cavort among them.

The 54-year-old veterinary ophthalmologist is one of eight citizens currently volunteering to look after “Stadtgrün naturnah” areas.

For Inken Domany from the municipal environmental office in Geretsried, "it's great when I notice that there are people who are also committed," she says.

On a rainy afternoon, she and Rogge examine the blossoming triangle.

The two are thrilled with how it has developed.

"That's where we want to go with all urban areas," says Domany.

"Urban green close to nature" in Geretsried: Citizens take care of areas on a voluntary basis

"Stadtgrün naturnah" is a nationwide project to promote biological diversity.

The municipality is involved, for example by mowing green strips less frequently by the building yard or by leaving dead wood in the city forest.

The city recently planted special perennial plants in the traffic island in front of the town hall on the B11.

"We're experimenting a bit, seeing what's possible and what works."

“Urban green near to nature” projects are currently running on 20 areas in the city area.

Domany is grateful that citizens are committed to this.

If you have an area in mind, you can contact the Environment Agency with a suggestion.

That's how Gabriele Rogge did it.

At first she imagined islands of flowers in the meadow, but that wouldn't have been practical, she explains.

So the triangle was chosen right at the traffic light.

More soil than crops: in March last year the area was not as overgrown as it is today.

"I want to preserve and promote local diversity."

"We removed the turf and planted wild plants in the bare earth," reports Rogge.

The yellow dyer's chamomile has continued to sow itself since then.

Likewise the milkweed.

In between, the blue viper's bugloss flashes through.

Some blossoms have tricked themselves into the triangle.

"What I don't know, I leave for now," says the hobby gardener.

It can also grow what you haven't planted.

In general, Rogge does not want to intervene too much.

She would take some of the September herb so that it doesn't get out of hand.

But otherwise she only weeded once this spring.

"It supports itself very well," reports Rogge.

And Domany adds: "With great results."

This is exactly what the Geretsried native wants to show with her commitment.

"You can also create beautiful beds with wild plants and it's a lot less work than with annual plants." She's been interested in native wild plants for a long time, says Rogge, who is also involved in Neuer Platz and the "Nail and Thread" hands-on workshop.

"City green close to nature" is a great option if you like gardening but don't have your own garden.

"I want to preserve and promote local diversity." Everyone can do something for this, be it just a green meter on the balcony.

It's also nice to see for people.

Gabriele Rogge now walks from home along Egerlandstrasse to the city center, she passes the splash of color on the corner of Böhmerwaldstrasse and is delighted.

There is always something new to discover there.

On this day, a mullein blooms.

Rogge: "There are still many areas in Geretsried where a splash of color would be nice."
