Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) has spoken out in favor of a fourth vaccination for those under 60.
This should be done in consultation with the family doctor responsible.
"If someone wants to enjoy the summer and not take the risk of falling ill, then I would recommend vaccination to younger people in consultation with their family doctor," he said in the SPIEGEL top-level discussion with moderator Markus Feldenkirchen.
"Then you simply have a completely different level of security." The risk of long-Covid is significantly reduced for a few months, as is the risk of infection.
Lauterbach assumes that there will be a "very difficult autumn".
In addition, Lauterbach indicated that the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) would follow suit with their recommendation.
"The European Commission has followed the recommendation I have been making for two months," he said.
"I'm pretty sure that the Stiko will do the same." So far, the Stiko has only recommended the fourth vaccination to citizens over the age of 70 and people from risk groups.
According to Lauterbach, a vaccine adapted to Omikron can still be taken after the fourth vaccination.
He expects such a vaccine for late August or early September.
