Dozens of murders reported in Haiti due to war between criminal gangs

An NGO registered 89 fatalities this week in the impoverished Caribbean nation. The UN has postponed an important vote on how long its mission on the island will last.


Haitian officials have reported several dozen murders in the last week due to conflicts between the different criminal gangs that devastate the Caribbean nation.

The violence has been centered in the impoverished Cite Soleil district of Port-au-Prince.

The non-governmental organization National Network for the Defense of Human Rights has recorded at least 89 homicides in the capital in recent days.

"The partial balance of these armed attacks is very high," the organization said in a statement,

At least 16 people have disappeared in the last seven days.

In a single day, on July 8, 47 people were killed in the Nan Brooklyn neighborhood, after a coalition of two armed gangs known as G-9 and Fanmi e Alye attacked that bloc, one of three comprising Cité Soleil.

The UN Security Council postponed a vote on Wednesday to prolong the international organization's political mission on the island, due to an objection from China, which asked to review the proposed resolution.
