Drama in Italy: Prime Minister resigns after party abstained
Mario Draghi has resigned after saying he would not want to lead a government of which the Five Star Party is not a member.
"The national unity coalition that supported this government no longer exists," he declared.
The president must decide whether to try to persuade Draghi to form an alternative government, find a new leader or advance the election.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced his resignation tonight (Wednesday) after the coalition's five-star party in the coalition abstained.
"The national unity coalition that supported this government no longer exists," the 74-year-old Draghi declared.
Coalition parties in Italy are expected to fight each other in the national elections scheduled for early 2023.
Draghi said he would not want to form a government without the Five Star Party, which garnered the highest number of votes in the previous 2018 elections but has since suffered defections and loss of public support.
Italian President Sergio Materella must decide whether to try to persuade Draghi to form an alternative government, find a new leader who will take Italy to the elections next year or whether to advance the elections.
