Only club members are still allowed to surf on the new Nuremberg perm.

From August everyone is allowed on the wave - but only for an extra charge.

Nuremberg - The Franconian surfers fought for the first river wave in northern Bavaria for exactly ten years.

Since the opening this spring with Markus Söder (CSU), around 500 members of the "Permanent Wave" surf club have been able to surf the standing wave on the Pegnitz.

With the start of the summer holidays, all leisure surfers and hobby surfers without a membership card should finally be able to plunge into the new Nuremberg surfing wave.

New surf wave in Nuremberg should cost for non-members

"In August we want to ignite the next level and also offer surfing times for the public so that non-members can also surf," announced Thorsten Keck, chairman of the Nuremberg association "Permanent Wave", on Wednesday on request.

The wave is still reserved for the almost 500 members.

According to Keck, the exact amount for the fee-based fun on the wave for everyone has not yet been determined.

Probably two hours should cost about half of the monthly membership fee.

This is currently 20 euros per month.

Women and young people under the age of 25 are preferred as new members

Speaking of membership: In principle, anyone interested could join the association.

At present, however, young people under the age of 25 and female surfers are particularly encouraged to join.

These should be able to ride the wave immediately as a "lure", while seasoned surfers would have to wait a few months for fixed wave times.

When the wave is free, the men are allowed to ride the Pegnitz wave immediately.

According to Keck, this special measure for recruiting members has historical reasons above all.

Ten years passed between the founding of the association and the opening of the wave.

In this decade of worrying, planning and hoping, the members would only have paid a monthly club fee for the dream of a wave for idealistic reasons.

Numbers without consideration: Due to this special situation, practically no young people joined the association for understandable reasons in the first nine long years.

Therefore, this historically grown club structure is to be corrected with the current special measure.

Incidentally, the club wants to celebrate its tenth birthday with a big beach party on the shore of the new surfing wave in September.

Nuremberg surf club takes "moderate price increase" calmly

Meanwhile, the increased costs for the construction of the new river wave in Nuremberg are making the headlines.

Instead of the almost 2.4 million euros planned, the standing river wave at the Fuchsloch will probably cost almost 3 million euros.

No need to panic for the surf club.

"The slight additional costs don't unhinge us as an association," says Thorsten Keck, chairman of the "Permanent Wave" association, on Wednesday on request.

Fortunately, the supporters would not have made a big drama out of the price increase either.

The Free State has apparently already agreed to increase its share by almost 300,000 euros to around 1.4 million euros.

The city of Nuremberg also wants to increase its share in the city council in exactly one week by around 250,000 euros to 1.25 million euros.

The wave riders also want to raise an additional 50,000 euros for the increased overall financing.

For example, the opening of the wave for everyone should flush more money into the club's treasury.

Wave costs more than planned: the club does not have to fear bankruptcy

"We didn't calculate unwisely in any way.

The totally moderate price increase in relation to the total volume does not change anything about the great success of the wave," Thorsten Keck is certain, referring to the great popularity of the wave rider community.

"We are super happy that the construction of the wave went so well despite Corona," emphasizes club boss Keck.

Due to the consequences of the pandemic, the construction site on the shaft would have had to cope with a few jumps in the price of building materials.

Even the government of Middle Franconia attests to the club that the additional costs were due to "unforeseen, unavoidable circumstances for which the club is not responsible".

According to Keck, a flood once delayed the construction process for a short time.

In addition, the wave builders would have had to use a little more concrete than expected on the embankment.

The Nuremberg Water Management Office also comes to the conclusion that the additional costs are due to "sports-related requirements", for example.

That probably means in plain language: The Nuremberg wave riders don't have to fear financial bankruptcy.

To the delight of the Aloha fans, however, the surfing fun on the Pegnitz, which has been fought tirelessly for ten years, is only just beginning.
