US President Biden has begun his first trip to the Middle East.

A major issue is the threat posed by Iran.

In a joint statement with Israel, Biden sends a warning to the leadership in Tehran.

JERUSALEM - During US President Joe Biden's first visit to the Middle East, the US and Israel want to warn Iran against an escalation of tensions in the region.

Biden and the new Israeli Prime Minister Jair Lapid would sign a joint statement today, a senior US official said on the fringes of Biden's visit.

It would “reaffirm the unbreakable bonds between our countries”.

Part of the declaration was the commitment "never to allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon".

The statement also noted that "action will be taken against Iran's destabilizing activities," particularly the threat to Israel.

The security relationship between the United States and Israel would continue to expand.

Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Jair Lapid want to appear before the press on Thursday afternoon.

Biden pledged US “unwavering” support to Israel upon his arrival on Wednesday.

Negotiations on the nuclear deal falter

Biden made it clear that he does not want to remove the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Guards (IRGC) from the terrorist list in the negotiations with Iran on the return to the nuclear deal.

In an interview with Israeli television channel N12, when asked if he still feels committed to keeping the IRGC on the list, even if it meant ending the nuclear deal, Biden said, "Yes."

Israel is strictly against reviving the nuclear deal from which Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump, had withdrawn the United States.

Negotiations between Iran and the other contracting parties - China, Germany, France, Great Britain, Russia and the USA - have been stalled for months.

The background is said to be differences between Tehran and Washington over the status of the Revolutionary Guards.

Trump put the Revolutionary Guards on the list of terrorist organizations in 2019.

When asked in the interview, Biden did not rule out using violence “in the last resort” to prevent Iran from possessing nuclear weapons.

"The only thing worse than Iran now is an Iran with nuclear weapons," Biden said.

It was a "giant mistake" by his predecessor to get out of the agreement.

Iran is closer to having nuclear weapons than ever before.

Biden also meets Palestinian President

It is Biden's first trip to the Middle East since taking office a year and a half ago.

Biden wants to hold talks with Lapid, Israeli President Izchak Herzog and opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem today.

Biden is scheduled to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas tomorrow in the West Bank.

The peace process between Israel and the Palestinians has been idle since 2014.

Real progress was also not expected in connection with Biden's visit.

After his arrival in Israel, Biden was shown the "Iron Dome" missile defense system and other air defense systems.

In the evening he visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and commemorated the victims of the extermination of the Jews in the Third Reich.

The US President also met two Holocaust survivors.

At the end of the visit, he signed the memorial's guest book.

In the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, Biden again advocated a two-state solution.

He knows that this solution is not currently in sight, said Biden.

In his opinion, however, it remains the best way to bring prosperity and democracy to Israelis and Palestinians alike.

Biden wants to travel to Saudi Arabia tomorrow.

In Jeddah he wants to meet with the kingdom's leadership and attend a summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Biden is under enormous pressure in the USA because of the sharp rise in fuel prices - and that almost four months before the important congressional elections.

Saudi Arabia is one of the largest oil producers in the world.

Biden rejects allegations that with his trip he is now subordinating human rights to the demand for cheaper oil.
