Housing for people from the Ukraine is urgently needed in Grafrath.

There are currently 36 war refugees registered there, twelve of them children.

Grafrath – All are housed privately.

But some of the Grafrather families now need their own living space again.

The Ukrainians have to find somewhere else.

"It was clear from the beginning that the situation with the host families could not be permanent," said Mayor Markus Kennerknecht (independent) in the municipal council.

Five host families can no longer help.

But your wish would be for the Ukrainians to be able to stay in Grafrath.

"We as a municipality cannot afford this given the tense situation on the housing market," said the head of the town hall.

Long-term solutions

It is true that one wants to offer the refugees the apartments in the station building.

But that needs to be fixed first.

Kennerknecht hopes the community will be offered housing in the building that houses the Feneberg supermarket.

He is also pinning his hopes on further private accommodation – with long-term solutions being sought.

When asked by Karl Ruf (CSU/citizens' association), Kennerknecht explained that the municipality could pay the usual local rent of between ten and 12.50 euros per square meter.

By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular

FFB newsletter.)

But overall, the living space will not be enough.

Prioritization must therefore be given: Families with children, people with severe disabilities and people with special housing needs (elderly and aged people) should have priority.

county responsible

The district is still responsible for people who cannot be offered accommodation, as Kennerknecht explained.

This means that if necessary, they would get a place in a community accommodation in the district.

Otherwise, the only thing that would remain is the free housing market, where the Ukraine helpers in the district are also looking for places to stay for their protégés.

Kennerknecht justified the prioritization in the allocation of living space with the fact that single refugees are more flexible and may find it easier to find an apartment on the open market.

Begona Prieto Peral (Greens) expressed concerns about this approach: "What happens if all communities do it this way?" She asked.

She fears that certain groups of people would then fall off the back.

The panel ultimately agreed to the prioritization but against her vote.
