The Munich carmaker BMW is working flat out on the new class.

When it comes to propulsion, the Bavarians also rely on hydrogen in addition to electric power.

Munich – The Munich carmaker BMW is examining the series production of hydrogen cars.

The CEO Oliver Zipse told the

Handelsblatt

.

From 2025, a “new class” of electric cars with better and cheaper batteries will also come onto the market.

"To start with, we are planning a compact sedan in the 3-series segment and a corresponding sporty SUV."

BMW is therefore also working on the development of hydrogen drives for this new generation of vehicles.

"I can well imagine that we will also see fuel cells in series production in the new class," Zipse told the business newspaper.

"Hydrogen as an energy carrier will play an important role in many regions of the world." So far, hydrogen vehicles have been absolutely exotic on the streets.

BMW: Automaker urges openness to technology

The Munich carmaker relies on openness to technology and has therefore repeatedly spoken out against an early focus on electric drives.

Just a few weeks ago, Zipse again criticized the EU-wide end of combustion engines planned for 2035.

It is an "industrial policy mistake" to put everything on one card these days," warned the manager.

According to the plans from Brussels, new cars and light commercial vehicles may no longer have any tailpipe emissions from 2035.

However, the EU Commission left a small back door open for combustion engines, mainly at the urging of Germany, provided they are operated exclusively with e-fuels
