The recovery in ticket demand and a thriving air freight business brought Lufthansa back into the black in day-to-day business in the second quarter.

According to preliminary figures, the MDax group achieved an adjusted operating profit (adjusted EBIT) of between 350 and 400 million euros, as announced on Friday in Frankfurt.

A year earlier there had been a loss of 827 million euros.

Analysts had expected an average increase of 221 million this time.

After the news, the Lufthansa share increased by almost 10 percent.

Logistics billionaire Klaus Michael Kühne recently increased his stake in Lufthansa and became Lufthansa's largest single shareholder.

Return of air travelers, boom in the cargo business

According to the information, the positive development was mainly due to "continued strong development at Lufthansa Cargo".

Compared to the same period of the previous year, which was characterized by corona, sales increased across the group from 3.2 to 8.5 billion euros.

According to the information, the passenger business was still in the red, even if the Swiss subsidiary Swiss had achieved a positive result.

Thanks to a significantly positive cash inflow of around two billion euros, net debt should fall by a similar amount.

The group intends to publish its final figures on August 4 as planned.

The papers took the lead in the MDax with a plus of almost 10 percent.

The price increase was enough for a significant jump above the 21-day line, which indicates the short-term trend.

It also went close to the 50-day line for the medium-term trend.

With a price increase of almost seven percent at EUR 6.12, the papers also continued the most recent recovery - starting from the intermediate low reached at the end of June at EUR 5.31, they have now gained around 15 percent.
