An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred Thursday, July 14 in Ecuador, announced the Institute of Geophysics, without causing any casualties but causing some damage to the port of Guayaquil, epicenter of the earthquake.
The earthquake was "
felt on a national level
", the organization said.
It occurred at 5:30 p.m. local time (22:30 GMT) and its epicenter was located 13 km from the village of Simon Bolivar, near the port of Guayaquil.

Calling the population "
calm
", President Guillermo Lasso said on Twitter that the authorities had been mobilized to "
assess the possible damage in the region
".

At first I thought it was the wind, when suddenly I felt everything move
," Maria Eugenia Rosero, a retired teacher who lives in northern Guayaquil, told AFP.

It was short, but strong
”.
The town hall of this city of nearly three million people said that a house in the city center being demolished had collapsed and some buildings had suffered minor damage.
Residents of the area took to the streets to take shelter from possible landslides.
