The letter of a bishop read in the synagogues

The Jewish community will pay tribute this Saturday to Bishop Jules-Géraud Saliège, 80 years after the roundup of the Vél 'd'Hiv'.


There are words that weigh heavily in history.

Those of the Archbishop of Toulouse during the Second World War are of this caliber.

On August 23, 1942, five weeks after the Vél' d'Hiv' roundup of July 16 and 17, 1942, when more than 13,000 Jews, one-third of whom were children, were arrested to be taken to the death camps, Bishop Jules- Géraud Saliège had a diatribe against anti-Semitism read publicly in the churches of his diocese.

Eighty years later, this same letter will be read, this Saturday, July 16, 2022, in all the synagogues of France on the occasion of the Shabbat.

It's a first.

It was decided by the Chief Rabbi of France, Haïm Korsia, in conjunction with the President of the Central Consistory, Élie Korchia.

The idea is to

“arouse the resistance and the commitment of the greatest number”

.

In a message to the synagogues, Haïm Korsia explains:

“Few voices were raised to denounce the atrocities committed by the Nazis and the Vichy regime.
