Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin discussed with Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, the latest developments in Syria and ways to deliver humanitarian aid to it to ensure its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement today that these discussions came on the sidelines of the high-level political forum on sustainable development under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

The statement explained that the meeting dealt with the current situation in and around Syria, with a focus on the tasks of intensifying and expanding international humanitarian aid to all Syrians in need without discrimination, politicization and preconditions, respecting the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the rules of international humanitarian law.

According to the statement, the two sides exchanged views on the UN Security Council Resolution No. 2462 issued on the 21st of this month on extending the period of delivery of humanitarian aid across the border.
