An experiment conducted two years ago that was supposed to be completely hypothetical turned out to be a reality much earlier than expected.

A forecast by the UK Weather Agency, which predicted what the weather would be like in the country by 2050, turned out to be much earlier than expected - in three decades.

In the summer of 2020, meteorologists at the UK Meteorological Office made calculations using long-range climate models to predict global temperatures in 30 years' time.

The authors of the experiment were careful to emphasize that "this is not a true forecast," but "examples of future weather based on climatic forecasts."

The experimenters were stunned to see their forecast come true this week - 28 years ahead of expectations - as the heat wave that swept the country and Europe was set to lead to record-breaking temperatures never before recorded in the region.

In the UK, for the first time in history, a red weather warning was issued over the weekend, in light of forecasts of 30 degrees Celsius and possibly even 40 in some parts of the country.

According to Simon Lee, an atmospheric scientist at Columbia University in New York, "it's amazing to see how the forecast for Tuesday in the UK is the same for large parts of the country," he tweeted.

"What is happening now gives us insight into the future."

This week, temperatures in the UK are expected to be 15-10 degrees Celsius higher than the annual average.

The highest temperature previously recorded in the country was 38.7 degrees Celsius at the Cambridge Botanical Gardens in 2019.

"Climate change is already affecting temperatures in the UK. The chances of days when the temperature reaches 40 degrees are likely to increase tenfold in the current climate affected by humans," said Nikos Christidis, a climate scientist at the Meteorological Office in the UK.

"The chance of getting past 40 degrees is also rising rapidly."

According to reports, only 5% of UK households have air conditioning.

Gabriel Wacky, a climate scientist at Princeton University, said it was a sign of a climate crisis.

According to him, heat waves occur more frequently than cold waves.

"This is what to expect from global warming that prevents greenhouse gas emissions," he told CNN.

Scientists concluded last year that with each rising particle of warming, the effects of the climate crisis are exacerbating.
