An opinion poll in the Gulf states reveals: The rate of supporters of the Abrahamic agreements is declining Israel today

2022-07-18T10:28:25.283Z

More than two-thirds of citizens in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates see the agreements in a negative light • The decline in support for Bahrain and the Emirates is drastic - from 46% on average after the agreements to an average of 22% today • On the other hand, 40% of Saudis are still interested in business relations with Israel

A recently published opinion poll by the Washington Institute shows that the proportion of supporters of the Abrahamic agreements in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates has been declining in the past year.

A survey by the American Research Institute showed that more than two-thirds of citizens in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates view the Abrahamic Accords in a negative light, less than two years after they were signed.

Abraham's agreements were born in September 2020. Through the mediation of the Trump administration, then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reached an understanding to normalize relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, and later also with Sudan and Morocco.

In a survey by the Research Institute conducted in November 2020, 47% of respondents in the UAE saw the agreements in a positive light, compared to 49% opposed.

In Bahrain 45% saw the agreements in a positive light and 51% opposed.

That is, the camps were quite equal in size, with a slight majority for the opponents.

However, the current survey shows that as of March this year, there has been a drastic decline among those who see the agreements in a positive light: in the UAE only 25% expressed support for the agreements, compared to 71% who saw the agreements in a very negative or negative light.

In Bahrain, the figures are 20% in favor and 76% against.

The only few percent left are of people who have not responded or do not know.

Normalization - not in public

In the run-up to US President Joe Biden's visit to the Middle East, much has been said in Saudi Arabia about the possibility of normalization measures with Israel. Some steps have been taken, but below the surface - and not publicly. Did not mention Israel, and was deliberately released in the middle of the night. The survey data may indicate why the Saudi monarchy is afraid to publicly declare normalization with Israel.

In November 2020, the first survey data revealed that 41% of Saudis saw the Abrahamic agreements in a positive or very positive light, compared to 54% who opposed.

The current survey shows a drastic decline in the proportion of supporters - only 19%, compared to 75% of opponents.

However, a reason for slight optimism can be found in the data on the proportion of Saudis who are interested in establishing ties with Israelis in business and sports.

The name of the figure actually remains stable: in the first survey 37% of the respondents agreed that such connections should be allowed and 61% objected, and in the current survey the percentage of supporters is 38%.

It should be noted that a few months before the Avraham agreements - the rate of supporters was only 9%.
