Education and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) discuss deepening cooperation in the field of reproductive health

The Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Tabbaa, discussed today with the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund, Dr. Louay Shabana, ways to enhance cooperation between the two sides in the field of reproductive health, combating violence, population development and enhancing the role of youth.

Minister Tabbaa indicated that the ministry focuses on introducing the concepts of reproductive health through courses and workshops dedicated to science mentors and teachers and gradually supporting educational curricula with scientific information and concepts and developing them according to each educational stage, stressing the importance of exchanging ideas and experiences with the Fund, especially at the present time because the conditions of the terrorist war on Syria has affected girls' education and a number of them are out of school, which requires creating community awareness through school students.

Minister Tabbaa pointed to the need to cooperate also in the field of combating violence by preparing a joint project in this regard, in addition to the projects implemented in this field with the United Nations Children's Fund "UNICEF", which focus on improving the social environment, explaining that the ministry has launched a number of programs to support students who have been cut off. About the school through the self-learning and category “B” curricula, as well as the literacy program implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture.

In turn, Dr. Shabana stressed the importance of the education sector as an entry point for awareness and empowerment of reproductive health concepts, noting the fruitful cooperation with Syria in this field, which has become an experience that can be benefited from in other countries.

Shabana pointed to the need to strengthen the implementation of joint projects with the Ministry and focus on the optimal use of educational institutions to achieve integration between the school and outside it.

The meeting was attended by the Director of the Fund in Syria, Dr. Omar Ballan, the Director of the Youth Project, Reem Bjari, and the Director of Planning and International Cooperation at the Ministry, Ghassan Shoghari.
