Mega heat over Europe: Popular holiday region restricts water consumption

On the Istrian peninsula, residents and tourists now have to limit their water consumption.
Pula - The Istrian peninsula, which is part of Croatia and popular with holidaymakers, has been hit hard by the current heat wave.
Restrictions on water consumption came into force on Monday (July 18) due to the drought.

According to Croatian media reports, potable tap water may no longer be used for washing vehicles, cleaning streets, watering green areas, and showering on beaches and in swimming pools.
The only exception to this is the cleaning of markets and fish markets.
Violations of the Water Saving Ordinance can be punished by turning off the municipal water supply.
The provincial government of Istria justified the measure with the ongoing drought.
According to weather forecasts, no precipitation is to be expected in the foreseeable future.

Fire in the holiday region of Istria: the fire brigade and firefighting aircraft were deployed on a large scale
This is not the first incident in Istria due to the heat wave.
A week ago on Saturday (July 9), a fire broke out on the outskirts of Pula, the largest city on the peninsula.
In the affected suburbs of Valdebek and Dolinka, residents ran out of their homes in panic.
Parts of Pula were temporarily without electricity.
76 firefighters, 29 fire engines and a fire engine brought the flames under control.
Local fire brigade commander Dino Kozlevac told Croatian TV channel HRT that 40 hectares of vegetation had burned down.
However, there were no injuries and no houses were damaged.
In southern Croatia: Residents flee in panic across the water
Fires also broke out in southern Croatia.
On Wednesday (July 13) fires broke out near the Dalmatian town of Sibenik on the so-called Krka Riviera, destroying around 3,000 hectares of vegetation.
At least 20 houses burned down in the villages of Zaton and Raslina.
The inhabitants of the two villages were brought to safety by the authorities with boats.

The next day, firefighters brought the fire under control.
350 firefighters, dozens of fire-fighting vehicles and five fire-fighting aircraft were deployed.
The Krka Riviera, on which the villages of Zaton and Raslina lie, is a popular holiday destination.
It stretches from the mouth of the Krka River in the Stubalj Bay to the actual seashore near Sibenik.
