End of a long wait of seventeen years?
By signing an agreement with neighboring Bulgaria, North Macedonia is taking a further step towards the process of joining the European Union.
A first meeting with the European institutions must, this Tuesday, mark the occasion, but will not yet officially launch the negotiations.
To achieve this, Skopje made huge concessions.
In 2020, Macedonia became “North Macedonia”.
A change accepted with the promise that it would end the 27-year-old dispute with Greece and allow accession negotiations to begin.
This was without counting on the new veto of Bulgaria, whose nationalists consider Macedonia as part of their territory.
Resistance lifted thanks to an agreement obtained with forceps by France, during its rotating presidency of the Union.
Having won the power to block the negotiations if it considers that the Macedonian promises are not respected...
