Syria was elected Vice-President of the ninth session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, for a period of two years 2022-2024.

The website of the Ministry of Culture stated that Syria participated in the work of the ninth session of the Conference of the States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which was held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris during the period from 5 to 7 July 2022, over a period of three days, in the presence of 180 state parties, to discuss topics of interest Relevant to safeguarding living heritage worldwide and the future of the 2003 Convention.

The agenda items included a review of the reports submitted by the Committee to the General Assembly and the General Secretariat on its activities in January 2020 to December 2021, the study of 46 requests for accreditation from non-governmental organizations, and the approval of the procedure for including jomo soup” submitted by the Republic of Haiti in the Representative List.

The mechanisms for inclusion of the Convention, proposed revisions to the Operational Directives, the use of the resources of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund, the election of 12 members of the Intergovernmental Committee, and proposed revisions to the rules of procedure of the General Assembly were also presented.

Syria was represented in these meetings by Ambassador Lamia Shakour, permanent representative of Syria to UNESCO, and Rola Aqili, director of intangible heritage, representing the Ministry of Culture.
