The ratification bill to allow the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO will be examined on August 2 in the National Assembly, after the Senate on July 21, we learned from a parliamentary source.

Thus, the ratification by France should be effective at the end of this examination on the evening of August 2, according to the agenda set for Tuesday July 19 at the conference of presidents at the Palais Bourbon.

Guest country status

The signing in Brussels of the accession protocols by the ambassadors of the thirty member countries opened the ratification process on 5 July.

Canada was the first country to ratify the two accession protocols on the same day.

The signing of the accession protocols grants guest country status to Sweden and Finland.

But they will not benefit from the protection of Article 5 of the NATO Charter in the event of an attack as long as the 30 member states have not ratified their membership.
