On August 14, Murnau will be the focus of national attention.

The starting signal for the men's road bike race as part of the European Championships is fired in the market town.

In addition to the sport, an extensive supporting program is offered.

Murnau

– Anyone who entered the town hall around 11 a.m. on Monday and climbed the stairs could experience a surprise in front of the meeting room.

Because suddenly there was an oversized stuffed squirrel and said hello in a friendly way.

It goes by the name of Gfreidi and is the mascot of the European Championships 2022. Murni paid his respects right next to it.

A large green stuffed dragon specially made for the European Championships to bring joy and merriment.

The big event is approaching.

Murnau is part of it, because the men's road race for cyclists starts in the market town on Sunday, August 14th.

Since the Tour de France was a rest day on Monday, those responsible used the opportunity for a "first serve", as Mayor Rolf Beuting (ÖDP/Citizens' Forum) put it at the press conference.

On site were representatives of the organizational team, the organizer and various media.

Nine European Championships at the same time

The European Championships are not a new event, as Marion Schöne, Managing Director of Olympiapark München GmbH, explained.

In fact, Munich is the scene of nine European championships at the same time.

It is the largest sporting event since the 1972 Olympics.

The surrounding area is involved, and so it is that the road bike race begins in Murnau.

It starts at 10.15 a.m. at Café Krönner.

Beuting gives the go-ahead.

Around 180 drivers will compete.

You do two laps through the market town.

This calm running-in before the actual race is called neutralization in technical jargon.

Things get really serious near Schwaiganger.

The next stations are Großweil, Schlehdorf, Kochel, before the pros are then allowed to pedal up the Kesselberg.

It's not Alpe d'Huez, Beuting remarked, referring to one of the most famous climbs of the Tour de France, "but it's a short climb".

The route is around 210 kilometers long.

The finish is at the Odeonsplatz in Munich.

Marcus Burghardt, until recently a professional cyclist, believes: "The route will create an atmosphere

The focus will be on sport, but there will be an extensive supporting program in Murnau.

"We organized a small leisure fair," informed tourism boss Alexandra Thoni.

Various tourism organizations will present themselves in the culture park, but also the General German Bicycle Club (AFDC), 17er Oberlandenergie GmbH and Autohaus Ortner (more on the supporting program at the end of the text).

If you want to cheer on the cyclists, you can buy gossip papers from the tourist information.

There will also be paper flags.

Get people on their bikes

With all the trappings, you want to focus on the advantages of cycling.

“Our goal is to get people on their bikes,” emphasized Beuting.

Murnau has been experiencing a real boom in cycle tourism for a few years.

“It has increased again due to Corona.”

One thing is also clear.

Many citizens will lend a hand on August 13th and 14th.

"Such an event needs people who help and contribute," said Deputy District Administrator Dr.

Michael Rapp (CSU).

Incidentally, the costs for the Murnau market are reasonable, according to Tourism Director Thoni.

The supporting program is "almost in the five-digit range".

As far as the sporting part is concerned, the sum is "also in five figures", but not very high.

The number of visitors in the center will probably be in four figures: Thoni expects 3000 interested people.
