China reports highest number of local COVID-19 cases since May amid heat wave

By Shawn Deng, Robert Shackelford and Alex Stambaugh

China reported 699 local COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the most daily new cases the country has reported since late May, according to the country's National Health Commission.

This includes 199 symptomatic cases and 50 asymptomatic cases.

South China's Guangxi province reported 243 local COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, most of which were found in the city of Beihai, a popular summer vacation destination.

On Saturday, the Beihai government locked down urban parts of the city, where its tourist centers and attractions are located, ordered mass testing and banned residents from leaving their homes, stranding more than 2,000 tourists.

Gansu province in northwestern China also reported 231 locally transmitted cases, bringing its outbreak there to nearly 1,000 cases since July 7.

The provincial capital, Lanzhou, has been in partial lockdown since July 13, forcing non-essential businesses to close and some residential communities to lockdown with only one person in each household allowed to go out once a day to buy groceries.

The city of Tianjin, about 150 kilometers east of Beijing, also launched its second round of large-scale testing so far this month after two locally transmitted COVID-19 cases were found.

Meanwhile, China remains suffocated by high temperatures amid a heat wave.

As of Tuesday, 51 cities have issued the second-highest orange alert level warnings, with temperatures expected to hover around 37 degrees Celsius (98 Fahrenheit).

This is a decrease from the 82 cities that issued orange alert warnings on Monday.

Shanghai, which reported 23 local cases on Tuesday, as well as the capital Beijing, have seen temperatures hovering around 37 degrees Celsius (98 Fahrenheit) in recent days.

Residents of these cities may get some much-needed relief from this week's high temperatures as the rains pass, according to the latest forecast.

However, parts of China continue to experience scorching heat, with at least four cities expecting temperatures near or above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) on Tuesday.

These cities include the eastern cities of Xianju and Lishui, as well as Shengxian in the south and Turpan in the west, where temperatures could reach nearly 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit).
